Economics 2.0

Students “rely on the most basic search tools and do not possess the critical and analytical skills to asses the information that they find on the web”, yet there is an ever increasing range of Social Media tools and websites that lecturers can use to help students truly get the best from the Web.

Every few months the digital landscape changes, our choice of web services and technologies grows and we are ever more spoilt yet confused as to what to pursue.

We seek tools that will add value to our material at free to low cost and that can be rationally chosen. We also seek reusability.

This 90 minute interactive workshop will introduce delegates to a range of these tools and they will get the chance to experiment with them, with expert advice on-hand:

Topics to be covered include:

  • Podcasting and audio – how sound resources can enhance the teaching and learning experience
  • Critical evaluation of online information – including the new Internet for Economics, part of the Intute Virtual Training Suite
  • Social Media for presentations – how websites such as SlideShare, Flickr and YouTube can enhance existing materials in ways that will add value

The session will examine case studies of existing uses of Social Media in economics, as well as help participants come up with prospective uses of Social Media for their own teaching and research activity.

An active learning approach will be used with small group work, discussions and brainstorms, and practical exercises. All three facilitators have extensive experience of using Social Media, helping others to use them and wider knowledge of online economics resources.
